ZAVIER BORJA

Bend Parks and Recreation, Position 4

My Platform

I am running for the Bend Parks Board because I have a deep passion for the outdoors and I believe in the goals of the district. Bend offers over 1,000 different programs, 81 public parks, and 70 miles of trails. We need to ensure that our district has the opportunity to attend these programs while also empowering our communities with the information they need on how to access them. If elected, I will lead through collaboration and my work will be dedicated to adhering to sustainable growth and building long term practices that create equitable outdoor access and programmatic opportunities.

EQUITABLE GREEN SPACES

In order to best serve our community we need to ensure equitable access to our trails and green spaces that we all know and love. As a Latino, while I try not to speak on behalf of a whole community, having lived experiences and working within this community, I believe that I have a deep understanding. We have a fantastic opportunity to reshape the narrative of what it means to be outside and enjoy these spaces. Everyone should know where these trails and parks are in order to enjoy them. Ensuring they believe that these spaces are for them. My lens as Latino and who does work primarily to help serve underrepresented groups, allows me to bring new expertise and perspective to the Parks and Rec table.

COLLABORATION

I want to ensure the Bend Parks as a whole are continuing to partner at a high-level with other nonprofits and organizations as well as other intergovernmental partnerships/collaborations. I’m a firm believer in not reinventing the wheel. If there is someone out there who is an expert or is already doing the work, we should partner with them. Then we can focus on ways in which we can leverage our strength to better our community.

SUSTAINABLE GROWTH

We all know Bend is growing at increasingly rapid rates. We must thoughtfully consider the existing communities we are impacting and the new folks we are welcoming. To grow sustainably means we lead with actionable items that set up our communities for success, like maintaining and updating our current facilities. Doing so allows us and our communities to benefit when optimal growth opportunities come around, such as the Big Sky expansion.

Representation

Identifying as a Latino, I feel that visual representation is vital when we are having the conversation of equity, especially when it comes to positions of “power” and in this case an elected seat. Seeing someone who looks like you, in itself can allow for breaking down barriers. As well as being able to open the door for further insights into specifically the Latinx community. Also, being someone who is younger than what has been traditionally been seen in these seats, allows for the potential of more involvement in a multitude of positive ways.

About Zavier Borja

I am first generation Mexican-American, born in Redmond, Oregon and grew up in Madras. I have lived in Bend, coming up on 10 years. My passions include serving our youth, communities and getting them outside. I’ve worked for various youth programs for the past nine years, including the Boys and Girls Club of Bend, Bend Parks and Recreation District, and Education Outside in San Francisco. Lastly, working for Bend-La Pine School District, as a Mentor Specialist for at-risk youth at Summit High School. When I returned to Bend in 2019, I created a local chapter of the nationally recognized non-profit, Latino Outdoors here in Central Oregon. In 2020, with Latinx leaders in the community and members from outdoor-focused organizations, we began the planning process. Our coalition secured funding for the staff position and were able to work in a collaborative manner to create – Vámonos Outside. From this I have also been able to serve on various Boards and committees, which include: Boards- Latino Community Association (LCA), Heart of Oregon Corps, & SCOPAC, Committees- Latinx Success Initiative (LSI), Central Oregon Latinx Partnership Program, Travel Oregon – Oregon Outdoor Recreation Network, River Plan Focus Group (BPRD), Co-chair the Children’s Forest of Central Oregon’s Equity Committee, Bend Young Professional (YP) Marketing Committee, Deschutes Trails Coalition Steering Committee Member, The Governor’s Task Force – Road Map to the Outdoors, Deschutes, Environmental Equity Committee – Governors Racial Justice Council.

In my personal life, family is everything. I have two loving parents and a sister that I absolutely adore. I am fortunate to have both sets of grandparents still alive and take advantage of that by spending time with them whenever possible. I also have a huge family that includes many Tio’s y Tia’s, which means so many cousins. I love them all so very much and they mean the world to me. I really enjoy backpacking, hiking and simply getting outside. I also love to eat and am a bit of a foodie!
